What Is This?
Greetings! These are essays about long-form improv comedy written by me, Will Hines. I’m an actor in Los Angeles. I co-own the improv theater WGIS, have been a longtime teacher/performer at the UCB Theatre (in both LA and NYC), and wrote the book How To Be The Greatest Improviser On Earth.
I write essays once a week on improv. Mostly it’s advice on how to do it or teach it. Sometimes it’s a comment on the current state of improv culture.

What Kind Of Improv Are We Talking About?
Long-form improv, done in what is sometimes called the “Chicago” style. I studied at the UCB Theater in NYC in the early 2000s. The UCB was based heavily on iO Chicago, which itself derived out the improv scene that once centered completely around The Second City.
